Start with the workstation topology
Draw the desk before choosing the dock. Record the host computer and its available port, each display and resolution target, network connection, storage devices, keyboard or mouse receivers, audio path and charging requirement. The diagram exposes whether the purchase is mainly about display expansion, high-speed data, peripheral consolidation or power delivery.
The DisplayLink catalog line lists two HDMI 2.1 outputs, one DisplayPort 1.4 output, three 100W USB-C ports and 140W power delivery. The Thunderbolt 5 line lists 120Gbps data transfer, 8K at 60Hz maximum display output and 140W power delivery. These are product-record fields; actual host and display behavior must be tested against the buyer's named equipment.
Make software and driver assumptions explicit
A port list cannot describe the whole setup. The RFQ should name host models, operating-system versions, corporate installation restrictions, required drivers or utilities, monitor inputs and whether the user can install supporting software. For managed fleets, include the team that approves drivers and the test account used during evaluation.
Do not treat DisplayLink and Thunderbolt as interchangeable labels. The buyer should decide which architecture matches its host fleet and display plan, then define an allowed alternative using required outputs, data path, power delivery and software conditions. Run a desk-level acceptance test
Prepare one repeatable test desk with the named host, displays, cables and peripherals. Check wake behavior, display detection, agreed resolutions, network access, storage transfer, connected input devices and charging while the planned ports are occupied. Capture the cable map and screen evidence so a receiving team can reproduce the same arrangement.
Docking stations are accessories and start at 20 units per SKU. They may be combined with other lines in one order, subject to the approved total order value. Specify the exact dock, included power supply and cables, plug, package language, quantity and accepted substitute. Current stock, price and quote validity are confirmed during RFQ review.
Docking stations follow office refresh cycles rather than retail seasons, so the buyer here is usually equipping desks, not shelves. Match the dock tier to the fleet it serves — multi-display Thunderbolt for workstations, compact USB-C for hot desks — and count ports against the peripherals already on the desk before choosing a tier. A spare dock per floor saves more support tickets than any warranty clause.
